The European Commission announced it’s emission trading scheme will start in 2011 for aviation, though the ruling is subject to review by member states individually.
Airlines will be able to sell surplus allowances to other interested parties, and it is forecasted airlines could make over € 3 billion of additional revenue for that.
Several airlines and their trade organizations said they welcomed ETS, but also warn for misuse and any ETS must go hand-in-hand with infrastructure development.
